Did you know that Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) is a hormone that is secreted by the pituitary gland in the brain and released into the bloodstream? The proper secretion of this hormone is integral for fertility in both males and females. In females, the FSH controls the menstrual cycle. FSH aids in the growth of the egg, and the levels of FSH are generally high before ovulation. After that, the levels tend to decrease. In men, FSH helps with the creation of sperm.

FSH Levels: Implications for Menopause, PCOS, and Male Health

Although these are ideal conditions, many individuals have either high or low levels of FSH. High levels of FSH in women aged between 45 years to 50 years mostly mean that they could be approaching menopause, which is when women stop menstruating. The increased production of FSH is due to a sharp decline in the secretion of estrogen, another important hormone.

In women, high levels of FSH could also indicate that they may be dealing with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and other ovarian issues. Although PCOS is not a life-threatening condition for most people, it can cause infertility in women. If men have high levels of FSH, it could mean that the testicles are damaged due to reasons such as excessive consumption of alcohol and other drugs, radiation, chemotherapy, genetic disorders, etc.

On the other hand, if there are low levels of FSH, then in females it could typically mean that your ovaries aren’t functioning properly or that your pituitary gland is not secreting enough FSH. In males, low levels could mean that they have a disorder associated with the pituitary glandor hypothalamus.

Abnormal FSH Levels treatment and solution

There are many treatments available to deal with abnormal levels of FSH. However, it depends on the underlying cause. Most treatments involve hormone therapy and lifestyle changes.
